Getting Legally Married in Thailand: A Step-by-Step Guide

30 July 2026 By The Moment of Love 2 min read
The paperwork for a legal Thai marriage is straightforward once you know the order of the steps. Here is the full process for foreign couples, start to finish.

Many couples hold their ceremony on the beach and complete the legal registration separately, either at home or in Bangkok beforehand. Both are valid approaches. If you want the marriage itself to be legally registered in Thailand, this is the sequence.

Step 1: Affirmation of freedom to marry

You each need a document from your own embassy in Bangkok confirming you are free to marry. Requirements differ by nationality, so check your embassy's website early. Some issue it the same day; others need an appointment booked weeks ahead.

Step 2: Translation

The affirmation must be translated into Thai by a certified translator. This is quick and inexpensive, and most translation offices near the embassies do it routinely.

Step 3: Legalisation

Both the original and the translation are legalised at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok. Standard service takes a couple of working days; express service is available.

Step 4: Registration at the district office

With the legalised documents you register your marriage at any district office, known as an Amphoe. You will need your passports and, in most cases, two witnesses. The registration itself usually takes under an hour.

Step 5: Your marriage certificate

You receive a Thai marriage certificate. If you need it recognised at home, have it translated and legalised again for your own country's requirements.

Practical advice

  • Allow at least five working days in Bangkok for the paperwork, more if your embassy requires appointments
  • Bring more passport photographs than you think you need
  • Divorced or widowed applicants need additional documents; ask your embassy specifically
  • Nothing here needs to happen on your wedding day, and most couples prefer it does not

We are a wedding planning company rather than a legal advisor, and requirements do change. Confirm the current process with your embassy before booking flights. What we can do is coordinate the timing so the paperwork fits comfortably around your celebration.
